Flood Protection
Buildings need flood
protection. Why? Because
cost of flooding in developed countries comes mainly from damage
to buildings and contents and they need flood protection. The
people in the buildings need flood protection. If floodwater
is does not enter buildings then most problems from flooding
in developed countries are greatly eased or solved altogether.
Traditionally,
little attention was paid to property flood protection. Instead
engineers tried to stop water getting near properties through
heavy civil engineering techniques like dams and barriers. Why?
Well, in the past most flooding was caused by rivers or sea.
That no longer applies.
Flooding across the world is often caused by more frequent
extreme weather and/or an inability of urban drainage infrastructure
to cope with increasing demands. Reliance on civil engineering
with flooding coming from extreme weather and inadequate drains
means properties now flood much more often than they did - because
we have more possessions and more expensive buildings it also
costs much more. And civil engineering constructions might keep
water in flooded areas, causing longer term floods. New Orleans
is an extreme manifestation of such problems. Flood protection
for properties is the solution and a new industry is building
fast.
Insurers and occupiers are starting to realise that protecting
property is the only remedy likely to avoid heavy flooding costs
and is actually the only remedy within their control. Yet the
science of direct property flood protection has been under-developed
and needs to be properly addressed Flodef is addressing it.
Flodef is one of the best companies in the world of property
flood protection. It is in the forefront of this technology with
a number of existing complete property systems and many more
in development.
Flodef has a very comprehensive approach. It assesses each property
individually, looks at every way that water might enter a building,
suggests how flood protection can be implemented then provides
and installs the specified solutions.
Flodef's approach means that in the UK it has insurers who
will always insure against flood, at reasonable terms, a building
that is fully protected by its recommendations.
Flodef has a permanent R&D section, concentrating solely
on property flood protection, with probably the best private
test facility in the UK. It currently has around 5,000 square
feet dedicated solely to R&D with three test tanks and has
plans to expand it. Flodef does not specify or sell anything
without thorough testing by its own staff in its R&D facilities.
Flodef's existing products:
1. a retro-fit 'pull-up' system.
2. a high-specification system to cover unmanned utility buildings
such as electricity sub stations and grid stations carrying very
high costs of failure.
3. a new-build system for cavity walled buildings which flood-proofs
during the building process and links to 'pull-up' door guards
for complete building protection.
4. a tilt-up system that stands alone which is being used in
railway stations.
5. Flodef's products in development:
5.1. a glass frontage product for retail shops
5.2. a 'glass curtain-walling' product for glass fronted new
build projects
5.3 industrial flood-proof roller shutter doors
5.4. system emergency services temporary water containment
